A portrait of Mrs. Hugh R. French, with a title taken from caption cards and negative notes that the Bain News Service kept at the time, though the name has not been independently verified. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work from a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers covered politics, society, theater, and street life, and glass plates were the working medium of press photography before film became standard. The record gives no date, so the format is the best clue to its age: it points to the years when glass plates were still in common use.
