Reims Cathedral, where many French kings were crowned, is the subject here, though the record describes the image as a cartoon rather than a photograph of the building. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s, filed it under a title it could not fully verify. The cathedral drew wide attention during the First World War, when shelling damaged its roof and interior and its fate was followed closely in the Allied press. Illustrated images of the building from those years often carried political or patriotic messages, which makes this drawing worth reading closely.
