Rubin Goldmark is the subject of this glass negative, a portrait of the American composer and music teacher rather than a scene or event. He was a nephew of the Hungarian-born composer Karl Goldmark, and he built his career in New York, where he taught composition and wrote orchestral and chamber works. The Bain News Service, which supplied photographs to newspapers from its New York office, made the image. Its glass plates, many of them small-format like this one, give a useful glimpse of how the city's press photographers recorded cultural figures in the early twentieth century.
