Bernard Baruch, the financier and adviser to presidents, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service, the Manhattan-based agency that sent press photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Baruch made his fortune on Wall Street before serving on the War Industries Board during World War I and later advising Franklin D. Roosevelt and other leaders on economic and wartime policy. The record gives no date, and the identification comes from caption cards and negative sleeves that the agency itself labeled, so it has not been independently verified. Glass negatives like this one were a standard way to make news portraits before roll film became common.
