This glass negative is captioned "T.W. Lawson," a title the Bain News Service recorded without a verified date, so the picture may show either the Boston financier Thomas W. Lawson or the seven-masted steel schooner named for him. Lawson was a prominent figure in the early 1900s, known for his muckraking book *Frenzied Finance* and his promotion of Amalgamated Copper. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied photographs to newspapers in the first decades of the twentieth century, so the image reflects the fast, news-driven photography of that era.
