From the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, the Empire State Building rises over a site that had recently been cleared of the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, demolished in 1929. Construction moved quickly, and the tower opened in 1931 as the tallest building in the world, a title it held for about four decades. The print carries a copyright notice from Irving Underhill, Inc., a New York company, so it was issued commercially and shows how the new skyscraper looked to pedestrians on the street during its first year.
