Shot from street level at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue, this view puts the Empire State Building at the center of a busy Midtown block around 1931, the year the tower opened. Its 102 stories rose in roughly a year and a half, a pace that made it a symbol of ambition during the early Depression. The photograph was made by the Irving Underhill studio, a New York firm that sold street and architectural views of the city, so the picture doubles as a record of how the building and its surroundings looked when the skyline was still changing quickly.
