Dated to about 1931, the year the Empire State Building opened, this print shows the tower as it looked when it was new in Midtown Manhattan. The building rose at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street in roughly 13 months, a pace that stood out even during the city's construction boom and that continued as the Depression set in. The print was copyrighted by Irving Underhill Inc., a New York firm, so it was produced as a commercial view of the city's newest landmark. Notice the stepped setbacks and the Art Deco crown that made the building an instant symbol of New York.
