Billie Burke, the stage and film actress best remembered today as Glinda in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," is the figure this glass negative puts at the center of the frame, posed alongside a horse. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a large body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. Its title comes from caption information that the agency recorded on the negatives or cards, which the Library notes is unverified, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain. Bain's photographers often covered society figures and stage personalities, and pictures like this one show how celebrities were presented to newspaper readers of that era.
