A cowboy standing upright in the saddle of his horse is the focus of this picture, taken in Newton, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb, in 1908. Standing in the saddle was a staple of trick riding, a skill that Wild West shows and rodeo performers turned into crowd-pleasing spectacle in the early twentieth century. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news and feature photographs on glass plates. The title came from caption information the agency recorded, so the occasion behind the photograph is not documented.
