Here a man and his horse pose at Mammoth Hot Springs, the terraced mineral deposits in the region that became Yellowstone National Park the following year. The card comes from the Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, an Army Corps of Engineers survey led by Lieut. George M. Wheeler that mapped and documented the western territories in the early 1870s. Publisher William Isaac Marshall issued stereograph cards like this one for viewers who wanted to see the Western landscape through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth.
