Few pictures in the National Photo Company collection show a small lodging house on C Street in Southeast Washington, and this glass negative captures it under the name George Washington Inn. The company, which operated in the early twentieth century, documented the capital's streets, businesses, and buildings for sale as postcards and prints, so views like this one record the everyday commercial life of neighborhoods that tourists and officials rarely photographed. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
