Plate 72 in Eadweard Muybridge's series shows a horse stepping backward, a motion the title names, broken into a sequence of separate exposures rather than one image. The photographs were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 on the stock farm of Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder who had asked Muybridge to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge published the results as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* in 1881, and this albumen print comes from that project. Its run of poses shows how a movement too quick for the eye to follow can be split into its parts.
