A horse steps backward in this sequence, with each stage of the movement recorded separately, something the eye cannot pick apart at normal speed. Eadweard Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the stock farm of Leland Stanford, where a row of cameras was set along a track and their shutters were tripped as the horse passed. The print is plate 71 in Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. It is worth comparing with the forward-walking sequences to see how differently a horse's legs move when it reverses.
