This 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative shows an elevated railway terminal in Philadelphia, a structure type that was reshaping the city's streets in the years before 1910. Elevated lines carried commuters above crowded thoroughfares, so their stations and steel platforms became prominent features of the urban landscape. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views recorded American cities, railroads, and industry in the early twentieth century. The large negative captures structural detail that smaller formats could not, so it is worth looking closely at the ironwork and the way the station sits within its surroundings.
