A Black passenger is shown being forced out of a railway car in Philadelphia, a scene engraved in wood for readers of *The Illustrated London News* and published in its September 27, 1856 issue. Segregation on American trains and streetcars was common in Northern cities as well as in the South before the Civil War, and Black travelers were often refused seats or removed by conductors and white passengers. The print shows how British readers received glimpses of American racial conflict through the illustrated press. Some details here rest on older cataloging notes that have not been fully checked.
