George Clymer, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is credited with inventing the Columbian press, and this engraving shows the machine that carried his name. The Columbian was a cast-iron hand press that used a lever and counterweight to apply firm, even pressure to the type, an improvement over older wooden presses. The plate was drawn by W. Strickland and engraved by H. Anderson to illustrate Abraham Rees's *Cyclopaedia*, a London reference work, so it shows how American printing technology was explained to readers abroad.
