The new terminal depot of the Reading Railroad at Philadelphia is the particular subject here, a station complex built by a railroad whose lines radiated out from the city and carried coal and passengers across eastern Pennsylvania. The record gives no date, and the shelflist card credits the firm Heffron & Phelps, so the print's exact origin remains uncertain. Railroad terminals of this kind were among the largest and most visible structures in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American cities, and the Reading's Philadelphia facilities were central to its operations.
