Women sewing flags at the Quartermaster Corps Depot in Philadelphia make up the heart of this May 1942 photograph, taken by Howard Liberman for the Office of War Information. The depot was one of the Army's supply centers as the United States ramped up for World War II, and flags were among the many textile goods it produced for military use. The subjects include African American women, a detail that reflects the wartime expansion of civilian and industrial jobs to Black workers, many of whom had been shut out of such work before the war. The picture gives a close look at the sewing work and the people doing it at a moment of rapid change.
