The caption on this hand-colored etching, written in German and French, credits William Penn with founding the city, which the English king Charles II made possible by granting him the Pennsylvania territory in 1681. Engraved by Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt and dated to the 1770s, the view shows the busy waterfront, with ships and harbor activity along the river. Such views were popular in Europe at the time, when Philadelphia was among the largest and most prosperous cities in British North America.
