Jefferson County lies at the eastern edge of what is now West Virginia, and this map records it at a time when it still belonged to Virginia. Its best-known place is Harpers Ferry, where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers cut through the Blue Ridge, and where the federal armory made muskets and rifles. The town's position on rivers and roads made it strategically important, and it became the site of John Brown's raid on the armory in 1859. Worth noticing are the county lines as they stood before 1863, when the western counties split off to form West Virginia.
