Harper's Ferry sits at the meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, and this stereograph captures the town's rail and river crossing, the detail that makes it more than a generic town view. Stereographs like this were made to be viewed through a special lens, which gave the scene a three-dimensional depth that drew viewers in. The town was a strategic site long before the Civil War, a federal armory and a key rail junction, and the bridges that crossed the rivers there were repeatedly damaged, rebuilt, and fought over during the conflict. Looking at the bridge here, you are seeing a crossing that mattered a great deal to the people who lived and traveled through this valley.
