Harper's Ferry sits where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac, and this view looks at the town from the Potomac side, a vantage that shows how the river and the steep hills shaped its streets and industry. By 1850 the town had grown around the federal armory and the rifle works that made it a center of arms manufacture, and the river was the lifeline for both mills and transport. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had reached the town in the 1830s, bringing new traffic through the narrow gap in the mountains. Views like this one were often made for travelers and promoters, so they tend to emphasize the setting as much as the buildings.
