This lithograph looks along the Potomac River near Harper's Ferry, where the Shenandoah joins it in a gap of the Blue Ridge, a scene that drew travelers and artists long before the Civil War. The print was drawn by F.F. Palmer and published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1866, a year after the war ended and while the town was still recovering from years of changing hands between Union and Confederate forces. Its catalog subject headings emphasize horseback riding, so the riders are as much a part of the composition as the river. Palmer was one of the firm's most prolific landscape artists, and his views helped shape how many Americans pictured their rivers and countryside in the decades after the war.
