Jefferson Rocks is the riverside outcrop that gives this view its name, a rocky shoulder above the Shenandoah River where it meets the Potomac at Harpers Ferry. The glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1920 and comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns and scenic spots for sale as postcards and prints. Harpers Ferry drew visitors for its river gorge and its place in the Civil War and John Brown's 1859 raid, and the rock formations were a favorite subject. Expect some streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from age in the original coatings.
