Harpers Ferry sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, and this pen and ink drawing shows the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad station there, one of the earliest rail stops in the country. The B&O reached the town in the 1830s and built its line along the river, turning a small industrial village with a federal armory into a busy junction. Because the drawing is done by hand, it records the building's shape and its setting with the care of an engraver, a reminder that railroads were still new enough to be worth documenting this way. The town's later role in the Civil War, when the railroad bridge and armory changed hands several times, gives the station added meaning.
