Where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac, the river runs between steep wooded ridges, and this stereograph frames that confluence country rather than the town itself. The card was issued around 1877 by W.H. Tipton & Co. of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a firm that sold stereo views of Civil War battlefields and scenic American landscapes to a public eager for armchair travel. Harpers Ferry had already gained fame as the site of John Brown's 1859 raid on the federal arsenal, and by the 1870s the town was drawing tourists to its gorges and overlooks. The view also reflects the era's taste for picturesque nature, when photographers sought dramatic river scenery to be seen in three dimensions through a viewer.
