A silkscreen poster from the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project advertises *Battle Hymn*, a play by Michael Blankfort and Michael Gold about John Brown, staged at New York's Experimental theater. Brown's 1859 raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, in what is now West Virginia, made him one of the most divisive figures of the years before the Civil War, and dramatists of the 1930s often returned to such figures to examine militancy and conscience. The Federal Art Project's poster unit produced posters like this one to publicize the theater projects of the New Deal, and their bold flat colors and simplified lettering were meant to catch passersby on city streets.
