Jefferson Rocks is the rocky outcrop on the Virginia side of the Shenandoah River where it meets the Potomac at Harpers Ferry, and the name traces to Thomas Jefferson, who described the gap in his 1785 "Notes on the State of Virginia." This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed American towns and landmarks for postcards and publications in the years after 1918, when this view was likely made. The record's title and date are unverified, so the exact moment is uncertain, but the scene reflects the tourist interest that made Harpers Ferry a popular stop by the early twentieth century.
