A small pencil and watercolor sketch on olive paper shows the steamship Columbia stranded on Sullivan's Island, the barrier island at the mouth of Charleston harbor, in January 1863. By then the Union navy was enforcing a blockade of Charleston, and ships that ran aground near the island's shore were exposed to fire and capture, so a wrecked vessel there was a notable event. The drawing's soldiers and ship together point to the Confederate defenses and the blockade fight around the harbor. The modest size and quick washes suggest a field sketch rather than a finished work.
