Three exhibitions, held in 1758, 1775, and 1794, are named in this engraving's title, so it records a recurring attraction rather than a single event. Mermaid displays of that era were usually composite curiosities, with the upper body of a small primate or similar creature joined to a fish tail, and paying audiences treated them as wonders. J. Pass engraved the plate in 1817 for the *Encyclopaedia Londinensis*, a multivolume British reference work, so the image was meant to explain a popular curiosity to readers decades after the displays had ended.
