The title claims the Three Brothers, at 2,972 tons, was the largest sailing ship in the world, a boast that places it at the far end of the clipper era's ambitions. By 1875 the fast American clippers of the 1850s had given way to larger vessels, and the shift from wood toward iron and steel hulls was reshaping shipbuilding. New York lithographers Currier & Ives sold popular prints of ships, locomotives and city scenes to a broad public, so this one would have served as a showpiece for a port city proud of its maritime trade.
