Vasco da Gama's ship sails beneath a host of gods in this watercolor, a scene drawn from the mythological machinery of Luís de Camões's epic *Os Lusíadas*. Camões published the poem in 1572 to celebrate the Portuguese voyage to India that da Gama completed in 1498, and he gave the Olympian deities a role in guiding and obstructing the fleet. E. Casanova made the picture as an illustration for an 1880 edition, showing how nineteenth-century artists turned the epic's heavenly scenes into images of the age of exploration. The rigging and sails also offer a view of the sailing ships of the late fifteenth century.
