A watercolor split at the waterline shows a sailing vessel twice over: its rigged upper hull above the surface and the submerged hull below, rendered in the clear, slightly distorted tones of water. Such cross-section views were a favorite of naval architects and yacht designers, who used them to study how a hull's form met the water and how its keel and ballast balanced the sail plan. Works like this sit at the point where technical draughtsmanship and fine art overlap, and they remain a useful record of how sailing craft were understood and admired.
