This ink and wash drawing, the second of a pair of views, shows the American frigate Constitution during her engagement with the British frigate HMS Java. The fight took place off the coast of Brazil on December 29, 1812, early in the War of 1812, and ended with Java so badly damaged that the British burned her afterward. The drawing's date of about 1813 places it close to the event, when American newspapers and printmakers were eager to show the victory. Because the record lists it as part of the Marian S. Carson Collection and unprocessed, its artist and exact circumstances remain uncertain.
