The watercolor shows the Old Quarantine Station at the mouth of the Schuylkill River, a place where ships were held for inspection before they could continue toward Philadelphia's docks. Quarantine stations like this one guarded port cities against epidemic diseases such as yellow fever, which arrived by sea and spread quickly in crowded towns. Painted in May 1857, the work joins the Marian S. Carson collection of American watercolors at the Library of Congress, and it records a working waterfront at a time when river traffic and public health rules shaped daily life on the Delaware and Schuylkill.
