The frigate *Constitution* is the ship shown here, and it earned its nickname "Old Ironsides" in August 1812, when it defeated the British frigate *Guerriere* off Nova Scotia and British shot appeared to bounce off its oak hull. This color halftone reproduces a painting by Charles Robert Patterson, made between 1910 and 1940, a period when such prints brought naval history to a wide public. The engagement belongs to the War of 1812, when American frigates won a string of victories against the Royal Navy that lifted national morale.
