The title names Bassua, the coastal area of Liberia now usually called Bassa, where a waterfront is shown in this watercolor and pencil drawing. The settlement lay on the Atlantic near the mouth of the St. John River and was founded by emigrants from the United States working under the American Colonization Society. The drawing bears only the initials R.K.G., so its maker and the circumstances of its creation are uncertain. Its focus on the shoreline reflects how central the coast was to a young republic that had declared independence in 1847.
