Perry's expedition up the Tuxpan River, a Gulf of Mexico port, is the subject here, shown as naval forces destroyed the riverside forts and took control of the town in 1847 during the Mexican War. The scene was painted by Henry Walke, a U.S. Navy lieutenant who recorded naval action from the war, and drawn on stone by J. Vollmering. Sarony & Major of New York published it around 1848 as part of its Naval Portfolio No. 2, one of several series that brought the war at sea to a popular audience. The print is a useful record of how American naval operations along Mexico's coast were presented to the public.
