Engineering plates like this one, the third in its numbered series, were engraved to show machines and fittings in close detail, with each figure keyed to a lettered legend in the accompanying text. The mechanical figures here, which include blocks, pulleys, and metal hardware, reflect the equipment a working vessel relied on to raise sails and control lines, which explains the plate's place among the sailing subjects. Plates of this kind were valued by builders, students, and craftsmen because they recorded tools and hardware accurately before photography made such records routine. The fine parallel hatching shows how engravers rendered the curve and shine of metal entirely by hand.
