Off the coast of Hizen Province, near the Goto Islands, whaling crews once pursued whales in small boats, and this 1859 woodcut shows harpooners at work on the water. The scene reflects a long local tradition in which crews drove whales toward nets and struck them with barbed harpoons, a practice tied to the rich fishing grounds of the Goto region. Made late in the Edo period, the color woodcut is attributed to the artist Utagawa Hiroshige, whose prints of landscapes and everyday life were widely sold in Japan. Its dramatic angles and tense figures show how such work was seen by artists of the time.
