A whale skeleton, mounted and photographed sometime between 1900 and 1930, is the particular subject here, and the picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection at the Library of Congress. The Carpenters were a husband-and-wife team of writers and photographers who documented everyday life, industry and travel around the world in the early twentieth century, so their work gives this record a wider context than a single specimen. Whale bones were once common in museums and maritime displays, as well as in commercial whaling communities, and a mounted skeleton like this one would have served as both a scientific exhibit and a reminder of the whaling trade. The record gives little more detail, so the image is best read as a snapshot of how whales were studied and displayed in that period.
