Local fishermen on Cape Cod called pilot whales "blackfish," and this 1885 cabinet card records one of their drives, when boats herded a pod toward the shallows until the animals stranded on the beach. Such hunts were a long-standing part of coastal life there, valued for the oil and blubber the whales yielded. Cabinet cards like this one were sturdy studio-style mounts, so the picture was meant to be kept and shown, and it preserves a working scene that rarely reached the public any other way.
