This 1864 view shows a wooden building on the shore of Labrador, with several boats nearby and five men pushing one of them down toward the water. The photographer, William H. Pierce, recorded a working coastal camp at a time when Labrador's shores supported seasonal fishing and whaling operations, often run from temporary buildings and launched from simple landings. Pictures like this one are useful for seeing how such stations were laid out and how small crews handled their boats by hand.
