This lithograph, titled *Right Whaling in Behering Straits & Arctic Ocean with its Varieties*, is set in the far north rather than the Atlantic grounds where many whaling scenes are placed. The print was made by the Boston firm associated with the lithographer J. H. Bufford, whose shop turned out many popular views of ships and maritime life in the mid-19th century. American whalers began working the Bering Strait and Arctic waters in large numbers after the 1848 discovery of rich grounds there, chasing bowhead whales, which were then called right whales because they floated when killed and were considered the "right" whale to hunt. The title's reference to "varieties" points to the mix of whale types shown alongside the hunt.
