Edward S. Curtis made this 1910 portrait of a whaler from Clayoquot, the Nuu-chah-nulth village on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Whaling was central to Nuu-chah-nulth life long before European contact, and hunters went out in dugout canoes to harpoon whales, a skill that carried great prestige. Curtis, who spent decades documenting Indigenous peoples of North America for his monumental *The North American Indian* series, often posed his subjects in traditional dress to record what he saw as vanishing customs. The picture therefore shows both a real hunter and the photographer's particular vision of the past.
