Few pictures on this board show a ship and a captured whale together as directly as this one, which names the vessel, the *Nancy gray*, and the Norwegian place, Skaaro. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that produced vivid prints from photographs, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold such views widely in the United States. Norwegian whaling expanded in the late 1800s after Svend Foyn's explosive harpoon made it possible to kill larger rorquals, so scenes like this one record a working industry at a time of rapid change.
