This photograph pairs Columbia, the American defender, with Shamrock, the British challenger owned by Sir Thomas Lipton, during the 1901 America's Cup races off New York. Columbia, a Herreshoff design, won the series, and the contest drew large crowds to the water and the press. The photographer, F. A. Walter, worked in Brooklyn, and his view of the two boats under sail captures the rivalry that made these races a national event.
