Independence, a racing yacht, is the focus here, caught in a start line during the America's Cup races of 1901. Brooklyn photographer F. A. Walter, whose studio address at 62 Schermerhorn Street appears on the image, captured the scene at a time when the Cup drew large crowds of spectators on the water and along the shore. The contest between American defenders and British challengers was a major sporting event of the period, and the image gives a sense of the crowded, wind-driven start that made these races so closely watched.
