This print singles out the schooner *Magic*, shown under the flag of the New York Yacht Club and credited to its owner and commander, Franklin Osgood. Naming the owner and captain in the title was typical of yachting prints of the period, when wealthy owners often sailed their own boats and took pride in seeing them portrayed. The New York Yacht Club, founded in 1844, was the country's leading yachting body, and its members raced schooners and sloops in the harbor and along the coast. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued the lithograph around 1870, built a large business on such views of ships, sport and daily life, which made its images widely available to the public.
